Commissioned by Nelson and Co., the final painting was designed at Newlyn in 1906 and finished in the Finchley Road studio in April 1907. It was larger, measuring 27 x 19 inches and was eventually sold to Mr E W Fitchew at Nelsons.
In the parable, the five wise virgins keep their lamps trimmed with oil in readiness for the return of the master of the house. The five foolish virgins go to sleep so when they need their lamps in the night, they have no oil and have to beg for oil from the wiser ones.
