This watercolour catches a moment in time as the artist visits Okehampton on Dartmoor. Eleanor Hughes is better known for her finely finished paintings and etchings of the Lamorna Valley and its environs. She did travel widely and it appears that her paintbox was always at hand. Okehampton railway station dates from 1871. It was saved from the Beeching cuts, partly because of freight train access to Meldon Quarry. Nowadays it is well restored and sees occasional tourist trains. As painted by Eleanor Hughes at least fifty years ago, the station is a thriving junction.
