Thomas Carlyon was a successful lawyer and tin adventurer. He extended the Carlyon estates and styled himself Esquire. He married Elizabeth Hawkins of Pennans, Creed in 1715. This portrait may date from that time. The artist is not known, but Viv Hendra suggests it may be William Gandy, the Westcountry portraitist.
