Thomas Carlyon (1st) of Tregrehan (1658 - 1724) was one of the most significant members of the Carlyon dynasty. He inherited the Tregrehan estate which had been in the family for many years. He it was who initiated the building of the fine double pile house near St Austell in 1680 and was married the following year. He chose to commission his portrait from one of the foremost artists of the age. Riley painted Samuel Pepys and Ashmole (of the Ashmolean), also Charles ll, James ll - and he was court painter to William and Mary.
